CASE STUDY

HAAR Technology & Engineering Ltd have been appointed under contract to provide technical support as Lead Subject Matter Expert (LSME) for the Water Mist Fire Protection project, ES20.

This prestigious 7-month project carried out on behalf of the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP) is for the third phase of the Joint Industry Program (JIP 33).

Building on and utilising their many years of experience within the water mist industry, HAAR are developing the specification package for Aker Solutions Ltd (Chiswick, London). This involves defining technical, quality and information requirements for the procurement of listed and proven water mist fire protection systems for use across the oil and gas sector.

The framework, scope and boundaries of the water mist fire protection specification package were agreed with participating members from some of the world’s largest oil and gas operating companies, led by HAAR’s Mark Davies. The specification is intended to be structured as an overlay to NFPA750 : 2019 and includes reference to international fire testing protocols and approvals (FM5560/Classification Society recognised type approvals or equivalent listings).

HAAR Technology and Engineering

Working alongside internationally recognised water mist manufacturers and suppliers from around the world as well as other key stakeholders to develop this standardised specification, the combined perspective adds significant value to this process and the aims and objectives of JIP33 which are to:

  • Optimise and reduce the cost while having minimal impact on equipment reliability and lifecycle function. Pulling together the “expertise” of the water mist community to guide the O&G sector to procure more cost effectively and easily (and hopefully leading to additional and new applications).
  • Enable the oil and gas sector to procure fire protection solutions to be delivered from this innovative technology that is ahead of the international standards for water mist being developed.
  • Define best working practices to enable industry specific fire scenario engineered solutions (where international fire testing protocols currently do not exist) to be established in collaboration with the water mist manufacturers, internationally accredited fire laboratories, 3rd party approval bodies and the O&G sector.

The specification, including the technical, quality and information requirements are being constructed within the product development platform for requirements, risk and test management - Jama Connect™. This digitalised approach defines, manages and validates complex system requirements meaning that in a truly collaborative environment the risks and inefficiencies associated with documents and legacy systems are greatly reduced.

This specification shall be issued in early 2020.

Mark Davies, Managing Director of HAAR said: “This is a great opportunity for all of us in the water mist industry to work together to develop innovative technology and solutions to the challenges we all face right across the sector.”
